Ruth’s work has undergone exuberant changes over the years. For the most part, she currently paints heavily textured, Mixed Media paintings. Her current series include Abstracts, Abstracted Landscapes, Faces, Figures and “Divinely Inspired” subject matter.
Born in 1962 in Augusta, Georgia, at the early age of five, Ruth showed a natural talent for drawing and painting. Ruth grew up taking art lessons, and by the age of twelve she could realistically render virtually anything from still life to portraiture to landscape. At the age of sixteen she developed a passion for landscapes with one of her landscape pieces winning the Judges’ Award in a local competition. Ruth continued to take private lessons once a week through her senior year in high school, becoming accomplished in all major mediums.
Upon entering the University of Georgia, Ruth’s father strongly suggested that she major in accounting in order to make a living. Majoring in art was not an option. When she sought special permission from the Dean of the art school to take art classes, he exclaimed with great vigor, “Why would a business major want to take art classes?” After graduating cum laude with a business degree in accounting, Ruth, undecided on the right career path, entered law school; her mother had always wanted a lawyer in the family. Upon entering law school, she immediately knew that she had made the wrong choice. In law school Ruth met her later-to-be husband, Fenn Little, who, being a collector of art himself, recognized her talent and encouraged her to resume painting.
After law school Ruth accepted a job as a law clerk on the United States Tax Court in Washington, D.C. Surrounded by all the art museums, she knew immediately that she was meant to be an artist. For Christmas that year her parents gave her classes to the Corcoran School of Art in Washington. Six months out of law school, she announced that she was going to pursue a career as an Artist. Her parents agreed to support her decision as long as she didn’t ask them for any money.
Ruth describes the current emphasis of her work as “Divinely Inspired.” In her own words, “About ten years ago, as my spiritual life grew, I started to hear God telling me to paint a certain imagery. I would paint some but not all, thinking to myself that I couldn’t paint a lot of this ‘Religious Imagery.’ As I continued to pray and integrate my spiritual life and work life it became clear that my talent was a gift from God. When I painted what He was leading me to paint, the paintings were not entirely from me but of God and full of His power. Over a period of time, I felt God telling me repeatedly that in order to reach my full potential as an artist, I needed to fully yield my painting to Him. Today I strive and struggle to do just that. Each time before I paint, I pray that God would use me as His instrument to paint what He desires me to paint. When I stand before God I certainly want to hear that my God-given talents were used for His glory.”
Ruth has been married for nineteen years and is the mother of two girls. Other than painting, she enjoys spending time with her family, being outdoors, gardening, hiking and walking. She attends The Church of the Apostles in Atlanta, Georgia.
